Hey guys, so this is a complete transcription of Bob’s Q&A (mostly…like 95%). Sorry it took so long but i hope you enjoy! I’ll be posting the actual video in the next day or so but the video quality isn’t that great and it’s kind of hard to hear so i thought it would be nice to have this too! Enjoy :)
- If Bob could protect any three items from the apocalypse that were found in Mt Weather he’d look after the art, specifically a painting that featured a scantily clad man with a suspicious face, the piano (bc he wants to learn to play) and the kitchen bc he wants the chocolate cake.
- Three items he’d make sure survived human existence he would still keep the piano, he’d keep the cover of the bible but he’d rewrite it in his own words so he’s writing history and Picasso’s Guernica (he mentioned he loves Van Gogh) but he picked Guernica bc it represents talks about the revolution.
- He talked about funny moments on set and mentioned the scene with Mel and Sterling on the cliff-the bottom of the cliff was a green screen and instead of talking to the actress he was talking to a rock with a smiley face on it. The director kept telling him to “feel it” and Bob joked, “it’s a freaking stone man!” He mentioned Henry Cusack as being fun on set. He said there’s always things falling off like radios and that the girls (when in grounder gear) are constantly having issues with stuff breaking like a belt breaking or a vest popping open.
- Someone asked about Bellamy’s girlfriend dying and they couldn’t remember her name and Bob passionately said, “Gina-she was real!” The actual question was whether Gina dying was the catalyst to him joining up with Pike. He said:
“I think for Bellamy it stems back a long way. I think you have to look at the way that the grounders have treated the skaikru. There were 100 children that turned up and then were forced to fight an army of 300 grounders who were much bigger than them. Then they turn around second season and ask for our help. And Bellamy basically single handedly goes into Mt Weather, frees hundreds of grounders in order for them to help fight and then they just turn and walk away. And Lexa betrays them again. And now they’ve had this time of relative peace at the start of season 3 but there’s nothing peaceful about a nation that’s making you stay within these walls. They’re keeping skaikru within these walls. Grounders are still taking they’re medical supplies yet offering them nothing. The skaikru have no food and the grounders aren’t letting them harvest any food. There’s a lot of animosity in Bellamy towards the grounders. I think that Gina passing away and the grounders blowing up Mt Weather was just a real sign that they can’t be trusted to him. You know there was a period of peace bc the grounders said “You will stay inside Arcadia and you can get some supplies from Mt Weather”, which isn’t really a fair deal. When they’re owning all the lands around you and taking your medical supplies. If you look at it in that political landscape, it’s hardly fair. And just bc Lexa says it’s fine doesn’t make it fine. Lexa in a way, who rules by force, that coerces people by force, is kind of a tyrant if you look at it that way. She didn’t have the support of the rest of the twelve clans to make ours the thirteenth clan. In actual fact she had to fight and use her force in order to get that power back. So I don’t think you can really trust a leader that doesn’t have the support of the whole community. But yes, Gina was real.”
- His favorite season to shoot was s3 bc the scripts were always so surprising. He was actually happy that Bellamy took a turn and isn’t being just good all the time. He also said s3 was much more complicated and delicate, even though he knows s3 Bellamy has pissed some people off. He compared s2 Bellamy to John McClane from Die Hard.
- The only character he read for/wanted to read for was Bellamy. He found Bellamy to be more human than the character of Finn-he also said he didn’t have the same flowing locks that Thomas did.
- The hardest part about being Bellamy is that as much as Bellamy seems like a leader, he takes orders way too much. He wishes Bellamy would do what he wanted vs. doing what Kane or Pike or Clarke wants him to do. He mentioned that at the end of s2 when Eliza got to walk away, he wished that Bellamy could have walked away too. He said the Bellamy carries around so much guilt and that playing that type of character seven months out of the year can be taxing, mostly bc they’re not a fun show where they get to go to water parks and eat skittles (side note: I want a fanfic where the group goes to a water park and eats skittles).
- He was asked which other character he’d like to play and he admitted that normally he’d pick Raven (bc she’s cool) but he’d been reconsidering his answer and changed it to ALIE bc he thought he’d look great in her red dress.
- He was asked about how Bellamy would deal with Clarke and her betrayal when she returns, and he said:
“If I was to guess at what we’ve seen so far, it’s an interesting thing bc Clarke came back to convince Bellamy to do this thing and Bellamy disagreed with her. Then she ran back to Lexa and Lexa agreed with her and now Lexa’s gone, so who is Clarke going to turn to-” (person asked about Clarke choosing Lexa’s side and Bob continued) “Yes, she absolutely did. And Lexa didn’t have the full support and then it was her political stand point that eventually got her killed. And I mean it would have been Clarke but that’s-” (the person then asks if we’re gonna get to see Bellamy and Clarke heal that relationship, though she did say not necessasily romatically speaking and Bob got a tiny bit flustered here and then continued) “Well I think ya know the show is hinting at a bigger threat that is bigger than both of them. So in that respect than maybe.”
- He was asked if he watched the show at all and he said he did, though he thinks it’s difficult to watch his own work. He said he enjoys watching what Richard, Isaiah, Lindsey and Eliza, especially bc they all don’t really work together right now and he gets to see what they’ve done on the show. He mentioned the crew as being amazing, the CGI, the stunt team as being standouts.
- He was asked about his accent and said he’d grown up watching American and British TV and that he developed his accent that way, and he said each character he creates he tries to give them a different accent. He did work on it before he came to the states though. He said he watched a lot of Bold and the Beautiful growing up and compared Bellamy to Rich Forrester (who I don’t know but I did look him up). He brought up working with Eliza on their accents.
- He was asked how he’s similar to Bellamy and he said they’re both really loyal to their families but joked that he’s not nearly as violent as Bellamy is. He said that he thinks Bellamy is trying to be a good guy and that he (Bob) is a good guy but that in Bellamy’s world that’s not always easy. He mentioned that when Bellamy was on the Arc he was a good brother and a good student (nerdy Bellamy alert!) and at heart is that guy. Bob said he wished he were more like Bellamy.
- When asked how long he wanted to play Bellamy he said that as soon as he can grow a full beard will be the end of Bellamy for him (he then pointed out he was half Asian so growing said beard would prove difficult). He said he loves Bellamy and he’s one of the best characters he’s ever played.
- He went into the audition planning to use an American accent since he was auditioning for an American TV show.
- He said when you shoot sixteen-hour days and you’re working until 4am things get a little weird on set and said he’s had laughing fits about the weirdest stuff. He mentioned that Lindsey falls asleep on set a lot and he’s been accused of snoring on set but he denies the snoring.
- He was asked if he thought being made into a (Funko) pop doll appealed to him and he said sure-he’s a Dragon Ball Z fan so the dolls seem cool. He mentioned a fan made one of Bellamy in his Mt Weather out fit and said beige wasn’t his color but that a doll in his s3 jacket would be cool. He likes the Lexa one and the Clarke one and said it could be fun to get a bunch of them together and role-play with them.
- A guy asked Bob to convince him to watch the show via Haiku but Bob was told him he wasn’t gonna do that (pretty sure he was a bit jet-lagged). He joked that he can’t do that math involved and that he just reads what’s put in front of him. Bob turned it around on him and asked the guy about what type of person he was to help Bob figure out how to convince him. (I want to mention that the guy admitted to never having seen the show and when a few people started to boo, Bob shushed them).
- Bob said that as a viewer his favorite character would have to be Lincoln bc he’s a pacifist and has never raised a hand to anyone unless he was forced to.
- He said his relationship with Marie is awesome and that they’re super close. He told an anecdote about he, Ricky and Marie going on a trip and that they were acting like they’re characters with her (i.e. older brother and boyfriend) giving Marie a hardtime about getting her bags together, etc.
- Someone asked him to describe the show in one word and he said “Intense” but that pickin one word is tough. He also said Survival. When asked the girl to describe the show in one word she wanted to use three and he said, “Why are you letting yourself off the hook?! It’s tough isn’t it!”
- Someone asked about pronunciation again and he brought up his and Eliza trying to say “Unity Day” and also mentioned “Our world” being a tricky one too. He said Bellamy’s voice is so low bc it gives him the excuse to speak slower and therefore have an easier time with the American accent.
- Someone brought up the Lexa backlash and how he felt about people threatening to quit the show bc of it and he said:
“I intentionally steer clear away from that stuff. I understand the outrage and the sadness but to be honest with people saying their just gonna turn their backs on the show and ya know kind of slandering the show, I’m not gonna lie like it hurt. It hurt. Like we all work really hard on that show and I understand that you’re upset by this storyline but sometimes it’s just-it was disappointing. But I do understand people being upset by it bc it’s a very topical issue and I think that it should be addressed but whether it’s addressed in the kind of backlash and anger towards the creator of the show I don’t think that’s necessarily right. But yea of course we don’t want to lose fans of the show. One the show we love Lexa and Alycia is great. She’s an amazing actress, an outstanding actor and it was a real asset to have her. So it’s sad losing her and then having people say they’re not gonna watch the show anymore bc she’s gone; it’s kind of like a double impact.”
- A guy asked about what music people might find surprising on his iPod (which he said he hasn’t updated in like eight years) and he said he had some Pat Benatar and some Kate Bush. He admitted that he has Taylor Swift on vinyl at home-“True story.”
- If he could bring any character onto the show he’d pick Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen (his favorite superhero) but that he’d make him wear pants. But if he has to pick a character from a TV show he’d pick Steve Coogan from “Happyish”, Tony Soprano or Kramer (bc watching him come through doors would be hilarious).
- For his man-crush on the show it’s either Richard Harmon or Sachin Sahel, or any of the
boysmen from the show. If he went non-show related he’d pick Michael Fassbender bc of the movie “Shame”.- A girl asked him about bellarke and he gave his standard answer i.e. he understands why people gravitate towards them and “ship them”. Bellamy’s most emotional scenes are with Clarke and for whatever reason he feels comfortable opening up to her. He said she makes him want to be a better man and believe in himself (or did) but doesn’t see them as a romantic relationship even though there is deep feelings there and they seem to only really open up around each other and that they trust each other. (side note: he says bellarke like buLark which I thought was so adorable).
- The scar on his face came from a dog bite-a shih tzu specifically-and he had to get eight stitches to fix it and he remembers the needles going in and seeing his teeth at some point. The dog’s name was poejoe and it was a family dog.
- He said the hardest part about being an actor is that you’re like a gypsy and you’re constantly packing up your life and moving from one location to another and that’s why having good friends and family is so important. He said he gets homesick but being on-set does make him happy.
- He was asked about his tattoo and he got it in 2006 and that it’s unrelated to the show; he loves Lexa’s character but not that much. He mentioned that it’s also a symbol on Revenge and that he guesses it’s not that original of a tattoo. He did joke that the writers got the idea for the first commander from him.
- If he could resurrect any character he jokingly mentioned the grounder that Finn murdered bc he had Clarke’s watch but then said he’d bring back Gustus to see what he’d been truly capable of (if he hadn’t been so loyal to Lexa). He mentioned Thomas too and that he was sad to see him go. He joking said the gorilla should make a comeback too.
- He was asked Marvel or DC and he said without a doubt DC and Dr. Manhattan. If he had to choose Marvel he’d pick Ironman. He mentioned how amazing RDJ too.
- He said he hopes that the show explores other parts of the world at some point (he joked about them going to Hawaii). He mentioned Luna and the sea clan specifically (not gonna lie I’ve been waiting for that storyline to happen too) and that’d they be playing beach volleyball and wearing bikini’s. He said they could follow the Rockies down from Vancouver into Colorado and beyond.
- If he could have any job, and it didn’t have to work at it, he’d pick a soccer player or a racecar driver (or any sports person). He mentioned how being a rock star would be cool but also very daunting. He brought up the Amy Winehouse documentary and then apologized for bringing the room down (and again mentioned he was kind of out of it).
- He’s really into watching documentaries right now (The Jinx, The Staircase, Making a Murderer [which he didn’t enjoy]). He did say he’d rewatched “Stardust” recently and that the movie is awesome.
- If he could have any super power, he’d want the power of montaging; if he wants to learn to fly it would only require a three-minute song to learn it.
