so i already see people praising octavia and clarke (two white women) for hurting bellamy (a moc) onscreen……tf is fandom
I understand race being brought into a lot of things with the 100… but not with this. Seriously people were happy because bellamy was being a fuckboy about to get one of those women possibly killed. Bringing race into everything is what will continue to cause differing treatments of white characters and POC.
“#it makes no sense for race to be brought into this”
…….you do realise the two people that are heading this xenophobia plot are bellamy and pike (two moc)?? you do realise that this whole narrative is vilifying them and there have been posts going around calling for the death of bellamy at the hands of clakr or lexa ?? that bellamy’s character was changed to such an extent that he’s barely recognisable, just so he could fit into this narrative?? that people are praising octavia for beating him up in a future episode?? do you not see the trend here??
maybe instead of enjoying this, people should be asking why, yet again, the characters of colour are being placed in an antagonistic position. why clakr is the one making all the ‘right’ decisions, in contrast to bellamy making all the wrong ones (something very reminiscent of season 1). why clakr, octavia and l.exa are being shown as the heroes and abby as the voice of reason in camp (again – abby and jaha in season 2, anyone?). why this whole arc in general is disgusting and doesn’t make sense.
you can’t ignore the fact that a black man and a filipino man are the ones the writers are presenting as antagonists right now. you just can’t. and adding this to all the other racist stuff the show spews out every week, saying that you don’t understand why race has to be brought into everything is ignorant as hell
also ?? @ ‘Bringing race into everything is what will continue to cause differing treatments of white characters and POC.’ i mean… are you not admitting that they are being treated differently then? or are you just choosing to ignore it in this particular case? and the fact is one of the only ways we as fans can try to prevent this is by calling out shows that are treating white characters differently to characters of colour, not staying quiet or (as is the case here) actually praising the writing
The constant theme of the white characters always being the voice of reason or the moral compass for the poc in this god damn show is disgusting. You can sit here and whine about us making race a factor for everything, but the reality is that we have to. These subliminal messages of villianizing almost every poc on the show is a reflection on how the writers and fandom view us.
You can easily argue that they are no good guys on the show. So that’s why Clarke doesn’t get dragged for letting those people in TonDC die and committing mass murder at Mt. Weather, or why everyone understands that Abby had to let Clarke go to the ground to give not only her, but the human race a fighting chance. Meanwhile Jaha gets called a monster for being the evil chancellor who was willing to let those kids die, and everyone believed Bellamy deserved to die for ultimately causing the culling.
The bottom line is that all these characters do things with the motive of one thing: survival.
But somehow every poc who makes morally compromised decisions (just as all the whites do) can only get their redemption when a white character forgives them. This is a narrative we’ve seen over and over with this show, in the writing and the fandom as well.
Like yes, I get Bellamy and Pike did horrific acts, but I cant bring myself to be angry because I know this is just another example of demonizing the poc on the show. I can’t bring myself to be angry, because I know this will end in Octavia delivering Bellamy’s retribution, and I can not support that. Pike’s retribution will probably be death, and I can not support that either. Idk if you’re white, but if you are, then you have no idea how us poc have to truly analyze every character that’s supposed to represent us. And this show constantly perpetuates us as monsters who don’t know right from wrong until a white savior leads the way.
Let’s not ignore the fact that the writers of this show have opted to go in the direction of a colonization narrative, where POC-led grounders were the savages attacking the delinquents in season one + now that they’re led by white women the grounders are the “right” side and the POC-led arkers are the epitome of evil + are positioned as the colonizers. Which, like: yeah - but nice timing @ writers so that your white faves are never condemned and our POC faves are consistently taking the fall.
